Here’s what to cook. (Cook)

At the core of Japanese cuisine is short-grain white rice. Now that you’ve made steamed rice in a Zojirushi rice cooker, how do you prepare a dish with it? We’re glad you asked—here are just a few ways to either make a meal using the rice, or cook something to eat with it.

  • Chirashi Sushi

This is an easy way to eat sushi that is popular in Japan. Simply mix the ingredients with vinegared rice and serve. Ingredients and vinegar tastes vary by region.

  • Maki Sushi (Rolls)

Get a bamboo rice rolling mat and make sushi rolls at home. This is pretty common in Japanese households and all you need is the sushi rice and whatever you want to put in it.

  • Nigiri Sushi

It all started in the ancient city of Edo (now Tokyo), when slices of fish and other ingredients were placed on top of mounds of rice. It’s become very popular all over the world.

  • Oshi Sushi

An invention of the Kansai (Western) region of Japan, this type of sushi is made by placing topping on the rice and shaping it with wooden box molds.

  • Handrolls

Another type of sushi popular in the U.S., handrolls are easy to wrap, unlimited in what ingredients you use and perfect for sushi parties at home.

  • Zojirushi Sushi Rice

Many of our rice cookers come with a sushi menu setting, which cooks the rice a little firmer to make it ideal for sushi. Next time, try this setting when making sushi at home.

  • Rice Balls

So easy even kids love to make onigiri. Just shape the rice into a ball with a tasty surprise inside and wrap with seaweed; or add rice sprinkles for colorful variations.

  • Donburi

A basic dish but so delicious. Place whatever ingredients you want on a bowl of rice—the flavors from your dish seep into the rice while you eat it all together!

  • Curry Rice

With a gravy-based dish like curry, you can ladle it onto a plate with fresh white rice sitting next to it. There is a variation called Hayashi Rice that you might want to try.

  • Mixed Rice

The convenience of this dish is that once you mix the ingredients into the cooked rice, it’s ready to eat. A neat little expander when you’re short on rice, to still get a full dish.

  • Stir Fry

Make the classic fried rice dish with leftover ingredients and some soy sauce. Or you might want to use ketchup instead to make another classic—omelet rice.

  • Zojirushi Porridge Menu

Some of our rice cookers come with a porridge menu setting. Try this if you want a soupy rice dish ori a sweet rice porridge dessert.
